4 Ways To Flip Your Mindset
Pessimistic and negative self talk is often easier to spot and catch within dialogue with others, but equally as important is noticing and halting negative messages that we tell ourselves through inner dialogue.
Self talk is powerful and effects how we move forward, approach our to-do list, interact with others, and live our lives in general. Thus, flipping negative self talk habits for positive self talk habits is critical to our success and overall contentment.
Here are 4 ways that INC suggests to transform negative self talk into positive self talk:
1: Be aware of your mindset — Maintain awareness, so that you recognize when negative self talk creeps into your mind. Take inventory, noting how you feel and what repercussions may have occurred as a result of this negative self talk. Remember, nothing can change without awareness of what exactly needs to change.
2: Dig for the truth — When discerning whether your mindset is positive or negative, healthy or unhealthy, seek evidence of the truth. Try to list facts that support your thought. Then, do the opposite, try to list facts that debunk your thought. Taking time to complete this exercise can help you determine whether your thought is subjective or objective. Moreover, this can help you determine whether or not your thought is rooted in truth or not.
3: Develop a realistic assessment statement — Now that you have developed a list of supporting evidence and a list of contradicting evidence, you have what you need to create a realistic statement of assessment on your initial thought. As INC’s article notes, “The goal should be to create a statement based in reality.” Moreover, not overly negative or overly positive, but rather, a statement based in reality.
4: Ask yourself “What if…?” — Discern what the result would be IF your initial statement turned out to be true. Ask yourself: What would the consequences be? What would I lose? What would I gain? This practice can help provide perspective on the situation, so that you can then have a clearer picture of what you need to do in order to build or rebuild a positive mindset.
