The Power of "Yet"

Spot the difference: “I can’t swim” versus “I can’t swim yet.”

Which one of these phrases communicate a positivistic, hopeful outlook? Inserting the word “yet” (in the second phrase) suggests a possibility for overcoming the challenge at hand. However, leaving out the word “yet” (in the first phrase) installs a self-imposed ceiling.

Think about that. Three letters make the difference between limitation and possibility.

Adding the word “yet” to our regular vocabulary is a simple habit switch that can usher in a meaningful mindset shift. And, as Hafiz, a fourteenth century Persian poet, wisely expressed, “The words you speak become the house you live in.”

Our current understanding of our circumstances is only temporary. We have such a powerful upside in our lives. And the use of the word “yet” can help us communicate the possibility still to come.

So, consider: What in your world are you still learning? Put a little “yet” in your world and watch the amazing transformation that can happen to your attitude and all the possibilities awaiting you.
