Goal Setting Done Right
How can your team as individuals and as a group accomplish the tasks before them? Goals and goal setting are not one-size-fits-all. Here are 3 types of goal setting described by Indeed:
#1 Backward Goals
This avenue of goal setting works especially well if you know exactly the goal you want to achieve. The idea of this method is starting from the end goal and identifying the pathway to this end goal in reverse. For example, perhaps you want to bring in the company’s highest sales for the month. Now, work backward to determine how you will achieve this goal. You might set incremental sales goals for each week of the month and commit to reaching out to a minimum number of new leads per week.
#2 SMART-ER Goals
For this method, ensure that your goals follow the acronym SMART-ER:
Are your goals specific?
Are your goals measurable?
Are your goals achievable?
Are your goals realistic?
Are your goals time-bound?
Then, as you continue on the path of achieving your goals, be sure to take these two measures:
Evaluate the progress of your goals on a regular basis.
Readjust your plan as needed as you proceed.
#3 Visual Goals
Do you or does someone on your team prefer visual representations? If so, this method for goal setting may be the ticket. For example, you might create a dream board or Pinterest page with various images of your goal and how you intend to reach it. Not only can a visual like this help you determine your goal, but it may also keep you motivated along the way.
