How Do I Make My Speech Relevant To My Audience?
#1 Put yourself in your audience’s shoes while writing.
Ask yourself: what problem, goals, and objectives does my audience hold? And how can you help them solve, explore, or find closure in these areas? Your message is directed to them, so know what your audience values and keep these values in mind as you craft your message and approach.
#2 Use language mirroring.
Did you know that mirroring another person’s language, spoken or through body movements, can help to build the connection between the two of you? While in most cases, a speaker would not be able to mirror the body language of the audience (nor would this be particularly engaging), a speaker can do his or her research on the audience to identify what kind of language the crowd tends to use and then integrate these kinds of phrases into the script.
#3 Help them solve their problems.
As part of your research on your audience, identify some issues and problems that they likely encounter. Find a way to integrate this into your speech, so that you can provide solutions for them. The way in which you integrate this technique into your speech depends on the content and purpose of your speech itself. Furthermore, this technique can be accomplished in a wide variety of ways — Use your creativity to focus on who your audience is and how they are receiving the content of your speech.
